Short Abstract:

The Lithium Ion family of technologies are the primary technology for plug-in and electric vehicles but, it is also being found in hybrid products.  The many different Lithium technologies will force technicians to become familiar with it so they will understand how it impacts diagnostics and repair.  Each family can have a different discharging voltage characteristic which effects vehicle and Scan Tool diagnostics.  This series will provide the technician with the necessary information on all of the Lithium technologies, cell balancing systems, failure modes, diagnostics, and how these battery packs can be repaired instead of replaced. 



Course Objectives

By participating in this On Demand Course, you will be able to:

  • List the advantages and disadvantages of lithium technologies and the automotive lithium battery formats
  • Describe the discharging and charging process of a lithium battery cell
  • Describe the operation of a battery module/cell temperature sensing circuit
  • Describe the purpose and operation of battery pack contactors, the battery pack Pre-Charge circuit, and the battery pack Current Sensor
  • Identify the components in air and liquid cooling system for lithium battery packs
  • Identify and describe the components of a battery management system cell balancing system
  • Explain the difference between how vehicle instrumentation displays battery pack SOC% vs. actual battery pack SOC%
  • Relate in how SEI Layer growth effects battery cell operation
  • Describe how failure modes on the positive and negative electrode evolve
  • Compare the difference between battery power vs. capacity
  • Explain the battery pack Stress Test process and how the results can help determine what actions are needed



At the conclusion of this course, the technician will be able to identify the various Lithium formats, aspects cell aging, rebuilding concepts, and understand how to use Scan Tool PIDs to help analyze, diagnose and repair the battery pack.

About the Instructor

Dr. Mark Quarto


Dr. Mark Quarto is a Vehicle Electrification expert with over 30 years in the automotive industry. In addition to being an instructor and special consultant to FutureTech Auto, Dr. Quarto is the founder of Quarto Technical Services (QTS), which provides engineering services, diagnostic equipment, training, technical support, and consulting in Vehicle Electrification to all facets of the automotive industry.

Responsibilities include design and development of: diagnostic test equipment & software, management and technical education, curriculum and training programs, and technology innovations with solutions focused on Hybrid and Electric Vehicle Propulsion and Energy Management Systems. These unique diagnostic techniques and applications are effectively used globally supporting automotive aftermarket businesses.  

Other professional experience includes 28 years at General Motors Company with the last 16 years dedicated to Advanced Vehicle Engineering and as an Engineering Group Manager. Responsibilities included management, development of control and diagnostics systems, and service solutions for the Chevrolet Spark, Chevrolet Volt, Fuel Cell, Two-Mode Hybrid, Parallel Hybrid Truck (PHT), EV1 Electric Vehicle, S10 Electric Truck, and Alternative Fuel Systems Programs.  Prior 12 years included Service Training Development Manager and Resident Instructor in the technical training environment.  

Specialized Education includes a Doctorate in Technical Education from Nova Southeastern University, specialized in design, development, and technical education systems for hybrid and electric vehicles including high voltage energy and propulsion systems. Master’s Degree and two Bachelor Degrees all are in the areas of Electrical Engineering and Automotive Technology.
